Tulips, Folk Costume Details and happiness

The main reason for my trip to the US was an invitation from the American Swedish Institute to come and give a talk about Alice Lund Textilier and Swedish textile art during the 20th century. Helena has an amazing exhibition there, in celebration of ASI's new building, called In Our Nature. There are almost 20 large tapestries in the exhibition so it is definitely worth a visit! Three of the tapestries are woven at Alice Lund Textilier, Folk Costume Details, Mossklyftan and Seven Tulips.

Here is Folk Costume Details and in front Tamako Takahashi, one of the weavers who made the tapestry. She was visiting all the way from Japan to see the exhibition. There are not a lot of weavers in the world who master Helena's technique. So last year when we needed some extra help at the studio we had to call Tamako in Japan and ask her to fly over and help us out. Kind of makes you realize how special this line of work is...

One thing I thought was very nice was the small installation they had made opposite FCD. There is a weaving sample on which you can have a feel for the technique and yarns. I think that is a very good thing as it always itches in your fingers when you see a beautiful weave. And on the right there are the folk costume parts from ASI's collection that Helena had as inspiration for the tapestry. Very informative and beautifully done!

Here is Seven Tulips again, look at the last tulip - it feels like you can almost walk into it.

Helena also gave a three day workshop at ASI for participants who had traveled from all over the US to take part in the course. It was a very intense and happy atmosphere in the air when the weavers tried to get a grip of the technique in just three days. Seeing all of those enthusiastic weavers made me ever more excited about our weaving course!
