Busy as a bee

A lot of things going on at the moment, which is a lot of fun of course but doesn't give much time for writing on the blog. So here are some snapshots of what's going on...

Embroidered book covers

The embroiderer Karin Holmberg has made wonderful book covers to the Swedish classic series of Karl-Oskar and Kristina and their emmigration to America, "Utvandrarna", "Invandrarna", "Nybyggarna" and "Sista brevet till Sverige". You can read more about how one of these beautiful embroideries has been made on her blog (in Swedish with a summary in English). Kungliga Biblioteket (The National Library) also wrote a blogpost on the subject today.

If that isn't enough, here is Karin Holmberg sharing her thoughts on the project in a short video.

On a day like today

It's the international women's day today. In the world of textiles I've met a lot of strong, wonderful women - both in the past (through my research) and in the present (through my work at the studio). First I thought I'd write about my encounters with some of them. Then I realized that in my world of textiles the women are already in focus, leading the way in every way possible, in research, in art, in museums, in knowledge and in organizations. So, not to forget the many talented men working in the field as well I thought I'd show some textile art made by male textile artists. Enjoy!

The book of my dreams

A couple of weeks ago I found my longtime dream book at an auction. I've been dreaming of having a copy of this two volume book since I first read it at the Carolina Rediviva library in Uppsala when I was studying. The book is a real classic in the textile history field, written by Agnes Branting and Andreas Lindblom. It is about Swedish woven and embroidered textiles from the middle ages. It is also huge, almost half a meter tall! And the best of all, I managed to get it at a good price and in great condition.

Published in 1928, some of the pictures are wonderfully colored and mounted in the book after printing. And the typeface and layout is really beautiful as well.
