Reading tips, part 1

There are many delicious books about textile art and handweaving, although they are on occasion hard to find. So I thought some tips might come in handy. Since I have an interest for modern and contemporary textile art and handweaving as well as textile history this will be quite the mix.

My newest purchase is this book; Contemporary Textiles - the fabric of fine art (in English) which I haven't even had time to read yet. It features over 50 textile artists both established and emerging in the contemporary textile art scene as well as some articles on the subject. I am very much looking forward to digging into this.

A classic book about Swedish textile art from the 20th century is Svenska textilier 1890-1990 (in Swedish). This book I discovered during my studies in Uppsala and it has been a favorite ever since. It is very good to have as an encyklopedia over Swedish textile art as well as a good read when you are craving some inspiration.

Anyone who is interested in Swedish church textiles should have this book, Veneziansk Sidendamast by Margareta Ridderstedt, in their library. During the first half of the 20th century several of the established textile studios in Sweden designed silk damask fabrics that were woven in Italy. A remarkable collaboration that still shows in the many preserved liturgical textiles in churches all over Sweden.

Exhibition: SOFT

A last minute tip about an interesting textile exhibition in Stockholm right now, SOFT at Gustavsbergs Konsthall. The exhibition displays contemporary textile art from Norway, in collaboration with the textile art gallery SOFT and the organization Norske Textilkunstnere. It is open until September 22nd so hurry up and see it if you haven't had the chance already. I thought it was very interesting to get to know more about what's happening in the textile art scene in Norway. When I heard about the exhibition I realized that I knew all to little on the subject. If you want to read more (in Swedish) Hemslöjd has an article here. Here are some of my favorites from the exhibition;

A printed delight

I got lucky the other week and found a picture online of a Sofia Widén printed fabric which I hadn't seen before. The picture led me on to an antique store called Råmå Antik in Malmö. I instantly called them up and they still had the fabric in the store. What a joy! So a week later the fabric arrived in the mailbox at Alice Lund Textilier. 2 meters of a wonderful printed fabric from the mid-50s in a green and yellow color-scheme. The name of the print however feels a bit outdated, "Negerstammar", but the print in itself is all the more beautiful. A great inspiration to my current research project!

Prints and patterns

Last week I finally got started on my new research project about Sofia Widén's printed textiles from the 1950s. It's not difficult getting up in the morning when patterns like this is waiting for you;
