Thinking about rugs

Since our exhibition about Alice Lund Textilier's rugs is opening in a week I have been thinking a lot about rugs. And most of all the amazing treasure of patterns that we have in our archive. It seems I am not alone in taking an interest in Scandinavian rugs. A couple of weeks ago Bukowskis had their modern auction. There was a lot of interesting Swedish rugs being sold, primarely from Märta Måås Fjetterström but also from Agda Österberg and Sigvar Bernadotte. The interest from the collector's was high and most of the rugs went for double or triple the estimated price. It is great to see that the interest for high quality rugs is growing. That means that these artworks will be appreciated and taken care of for many more years. Here are some examples from the auction. You can see all of the rugs here.

Exhibition: "Taktil Historia"

Last week I visited Almgrens Sidenväveri, an old silk mill in central Stockholm. Today Almgrens is a museum but they also have some of the old jacquard looms going. The weaver Sonja is doing an important cultural contribution in exploring and maintaining the knowledge of how these looms can be used. It is always a treat to talk to her, so if you visit the museum make sure to ask her about the weaving.

I've written about this place several times before - besides being an interesting environment with the old silk mill they also have collaborations with contemporary textile artists. Plus I've worked there as a guide during my studies which makes my relationship with the museum even more special.

Right now they have an exhibition in collaboration with FAS, Fiber Art Sweden, a group of Swedish textile artists. The exhibition is called "Taktil Historia" (Tactile History) and is the first exhibition in a three year long collaboration between FAS and Almgrens exploring silk in our time. It was a very interesting exhibition and I look forward to follow this project in the coming years.

Here are my favorites from the exhibition;

In the loom: Reconstruction

We have several projects going on in the studio right now. Recently I posted some pictures of a rosepath rug that we are making. Here is a glimpse from another project in the loom, a reconstruction of a tapestry to a church in Stockholm. The original has unfortunately been destroyed and we are making a replica. After the cloth is woven it is going to get some rough handling. The artist will use ausbrenner-technique to make a pattern. That means that chemicals will be printed on the surface which removes some of the threads making a transparent pattern.

Our rainbow of wool yarns feels a bit left out with only white in the loom...
