WEAVOLUTION!

It is a weavolution happening! This summer the art gallery MEKEN is showing contemporary woven textile art in collaboration with Alice Lund Textilier. There are many interesting textile artist and ateliers in the exhibition; Helena Hernmarck, Annika Ekdahl, Barbro Lomakka, Kazuyo Nomura, My Draiby, Maria Ray Johansson, Rosengångsvävarna, Handarbetets Vänner, Wålstedts and of course Alice Lund Textilier. There will also be an opportunity to try weaving every Wednesday when Riksföreningen för handvävning is showing how a loom works. I am very much looking forward to this exhibition. Hopefully we can show that hand weaving and textile art is very much an art form to be reckoned with today and in the future.

Thank you Fornby!

Today I got an unexpected call from Kicki and Kajsa, teacher's at Fornby Folkhögskola. Well it is not unexpected that Kicki would call, the school has a lot of courses in weaving and sewing and is almost a neighbor to Alice Lund Textilier. But the reason was a happy surprise. They had found an old rug and a tapestry from Alice Lund that belonged to the school and had now almost been forgotten. So they thought it'd be better if I would adopt them so they would have a better home. I was of course more than happy to say yes to that! The very beginning of Alice Lund Textilier's history actually starts at Fornby school. Alice Lund's sister in law Karin Lund was a weaving teacher there in the 1920's and 1930's. She started her own company designing and selling textiles in the early 1930's and in 1934 Alice Lund joined her in her venture. That was the starting point of what is still our atelier today! So in that regard I was extra joyful that these textiles has now come back to their beginnings.

The rug is a the classic rosepath rug "Hästtäcket" and the tapestry is probably from the mid 1970's. I found the original design in our archives which names it "Ackord". It also looks very much in color like the tapestry from 1969 that I bought just a couple of months ago.

So I can not thank Kicki, Kajsa and Fornby enough for giving these textiles a new home!

Exhibition: HV Textile Graduation Exhibition

After our exhibition at HV Gallery, they opened the textile student's graduation exhibition. The last couple of years they have showed their work at Almgrens Sidenväveri. But since the gallery has reopened they now are showing it in-house in stead. As always the student's show great craftsmanship as well as artistic ambition. Here are some of my favorites;

Oxelösunds skärgård

This week a rug from Alice Lund Textilier was sold at Bukowskis Contemporary auction. It was a knotted pile rug designed by Dagmar Lodén in 1969 called "Oxelösunds skärgård" (Oxelösunds archipelago). A beautiful rug in good condition about 2m x 3m. I hadn't seen this design before so it was exciting to go visit it at the auction house. And as always when something is sold I wonder where the rug's new home will be...

Vävmagasinet

In the latest number of Vävmagasinet (the Scandinavian Weaving Magazine) there is a four page article about Alice Lund Textilier and our rugs. We are so happy to show all of Vävmagasinet's readers what we do in our looms! I hope most of you have a subscription already (it comes in both Swedish and English) but if you don't here is the English version of the article. If the text is to small to read, a larger version is found on our website.

Change of plans

Unfortunately we had to cancel tomorrow's lectures with Helena and me. Helena got sick last week and had to cancel her trip to Sweden this time. Both Helena and I was really disappointed as almost a hundred people wanted to come and hear about our work. But the positive thing is that now we know there is a great interest for such an event so we will surely make a new attempt in the near future!

Instead we will have an open house tomorrow at the exhibition until 20.00 with some "fika". The weaver Ebba will be there to show how to weave rölakan-technique and I will be there as well. Welcome to visit the exhibition!

Welcome to HV Gallery!

Now we've opened the exhibition! It has been a constant stream of interested visitors. It feels great to get the opportunity to talk to people about Alice Lund Textilier's work and about hand weaving and textile art. In the coming weeks I've moved my Stockholm office to the exhibition space and will be here almost every Wednesday to Saturday. So feel free to come by, talk textiles and look at our work! More information about the exhibition here.

Exhibition at HV Gallery: "Ur vävstolen"

Welcome to an exhibition about Alice Lund Textilier at HV Gallery in Stockholm! The opening is Thursday April 9th 16.00. Below is more information in Swedish.

9 april – 16 maj 2015, vernissage torsdag 9 april 17.00
Torsdag 23 april, 18.00- 20.00. Föranmälan till frida@alicelund.se.

In the loom; pall

Here is a project that recently got out of the loom. A pall (bårtäcke) for a church in our nearby area. The church had an older pall from us that was woven about 30 years ago. It had now gotten a bit worn, so they asked us to make a new one in the same style. It is woven in twill of wool and linnen. The symbol is woven with soumak weft in silver. This is the result!

Coming home

Last week I acquired a new weave for my small collection of 20th century textile art. It is a wall hanging by Alice Lund woven in 1969. Best of all, I found the original sketch in Alice Lund Textilier's archive. Next time I am at the studio I will have a closer look to see if I can find more information about who bought it in the first place and where it has hung. In the front of the wall hanging it is an "AL" signature and in the back it is marked "AL-SW 1969". "AL-SW" stands for "Alice Lund - Sofia Widén AB". From 1961-1970 this was the studios name because Alice Lund took over Sofia Widén's business after she past away in 1961.

My collection of textile art isn't that extensive yet but I have a few good pieces so far. My favorites are the ones connected to Alice Lund and Sofia Widén. For example a couple of years a go I bought this wall hanging by Sofia Widén. It is always fun when works from the studio find their way back home.

Exhibition; Veronica Nygren at Thielska

There are several textile exhibitions on Djurgården in Stockholm right now. At Thielska Galleriet there is an exhibition about the textile artist Veronica Nygren. The exhibition is described as;

"Veronica Nygren (1940-2006) had the ability to weave an entire world into her art. She filled it with everyday experiences and political awareness, with knowledge about Swedish crafts traditions and global influences, in a vibrant dialogue with art history and contemporary art. Nygren indefatigably put the potential of textiles to the test. Today, she stands out as a regenerator of textile art and design in post-war Sweden. (...) By showing Veronica Nygren’s innovative art at the Thielska Gallery, we are upholding a tradition of taking textiles seriously, as an art form in its own right."

It is very uplifting to see Thielska making a large exhibition on a textile artist and also presenting it in a interesting context. So definitely a recommendation to go see it if you are in Stockholm! Another interesting exhibition right now is at HV Gallery about the Friends of Finnish Handicraft and their ryijy rugs.

Exhibition: Barbro Lomakka

If you are in Stockholm I can highly recommend a visit to Barbro Lomakka's exhibition at Almgrens silk mill. Barbro Lomakka works with an interesting encounter between felted wool and handweaving where the felt is used as inlays in a woven structure. She also explores the textile medium's advantages as sound absorbents, making structures that creates a comfortable environment.

Happy New Year 2015!

Happy New Year to all weavers and textile art lovers out there!

This year I had a very relaxing start to the year, I spent Christmas in New York and two weeks in Costa Rica enjoying the sun and beach. But now I am back with new energy to start what I am sure to be an exciting year. We are starting our weaving year with a pall (bårtäcke) for a church close to the studio. More pictures about that soon!

Another exciting thing for this year is another exhibition! This summer Alice Lund Textilier will be part of an large exhibition about contemporary textile art at Meken, an art venue in Smedjebacken in Dalarna. (And there might be other opportunities as well to see Alice Lund Textilier's work during the year but more on that later on...)

Here is a snapshot from Costa Rica. It is a beach towel in cotton I wove several years ago inspired by the Kenyan "Kikoys" which are similar in size and quality. It has come to very good use on the beach and unlike an ordinary towel it is quite easy to pack and dries up quickly.
